Questions and Answers
Red-Head Steering Boxes are some of the best remanufactured boxes in the industry! They use only the highest quality seals. All seals are either O.E.M. or produced by two high quality, long time suppliers of our industry. Probably the most unique and important thing they do is custom fit every single worm and piston assembly with new precision fit steel balls. This is a process not matched by any other company in the industry. This process is very important. The machining tolerances of the original manufacturing leave a small and varying amount of play that can be corrected in no other way.
Core Charge
: You will be charged $250 for a core charge. Contact us when the core is ready, and we will send you a return shipping label to send your core back to us. You must wrap your core up the same way your new box comes to you: Plugs in the ports, diaper wrapped around the plugs, placed in the heavy poly bag and put in the same box. By doing so it will ensure it will get to us with no issues. You must send the same box you ordered back to us for full credit on your core!
If we receive your core within 30 days we will credit your card back $250.
If we receive it between 31-60 days you will receive a $250 store credit.
If after 60 days, you forfeit your core charge.
Love It!
The redhead steering box was installed yesterday and it makes a hell of a difference! My Grand Wagoneer steers like a European car now!

The Final Fix
Short version, excellent. Long version, I have replaced some tie rods and all the front ball joints in a attempt to get the steering tighter, I messed with the adjuster on the "rebuilt" box that was on my Jeep when I bought it only to have the heavy feel and not much center return, but still a lot of play. This box fixed my play, I am hoping it fixes the stiff spot on cold mornings. The feeling is still a little heavy, but I think it will loosen up with a little time. A tip, buy new PS lines, even though I replaced my pump a few years ago and put on a new HP line, this one still froze at the box, so I put two new Gates hoses on with the new box.

Didn't work for me
This box was a disappointment along with Redhead support. It looks nice and didn't leak. However, from day one it was loose and had 3 inches of play. Redhead suggested issues were elsewhere and not their box. I requested a replacement that I would pay for if they would refund upon return of original and they would not. I replaced with an S10 box and it is orders of magnitudes better for my on-road highway driving. BJs has gone out of their way to rectify and my rating is not a reflection of their support. BJ's Response: the box was inspected and found to be tight and within specifications. Redhead did adjust the top end slightly, but was otherwise perfect.

Q:
Wag is currently at my shop; mechanic says new steering box is needed, but I cannot know right now if it's a three- or four-bolt unit. The current steering box is OEM. Can you make that determination or should I wait to get it back and count bolts?
Asked by:
Francis X. Kranick, Jr.

A:
It could have been either, as both were used during all years listed. I would recommend waiting and counting the number of bolts.

Q:
I’ve heard positive feedback about using a quicker ratio box for street driving, is this something Redhead offers, and do you have any thoughts about it?
Asked by:
Steve
- 8/18/2019
A:
The standard set-up is a variable ratio that gets faster as you turn more, which is desired for on-road driving. If you want less turns lock-to-lock, we only recommend that for off-road rigs as it can get very hard to keep straight while on the highway.

Q:
Is it possible to purchase a new steering box so I don't have to pay for the core charge?
Asked by:
Kevin Zwicker
- 3/23/2020
A:
The core charge is required. You pay the core charge up-front, and then are refunded once we receive a rebuildable core. If you don't have a core to send in, then you forfeit the core charge (which we use to buy a used core with)

Q:
my original has 4 bolts , but does that matter in long run? i have an 81 J10
Asked by:
Jay Hunter
- 8/4/2020
A:
The 4 bolt has a better connection than the 3-bolt, but many of the Full Size Jeeps came with 3-bolt connections from the factory.
