Product Details

Red-Head Steering Boxes are some of the best remanufactured boxes in the industry! They use only the highest quality seals. All seals are either O.E.M. or produced by two high quality, long time suppliers of our industry.  Probably the most unique and important thing they do is custom fit every single worm and piston assembly with new precision fit steel balls. This is a process not matched by any other company in the industry. This process is very important. The machining tolerances of the original manufacturing leave a small and varying amount of play that can be corrected in no other way.

Porting for Hydraulic Assist Steering Option: This option is for rigs with 37" or larger tires that do a lot of hard-core off-roading.  It is when you add a hydraulic cylinder and bracketry to the steering to help push the tires when off-road and against rocks, and the porting option on the box allows the steering box to power the hydraulic ram (not included).  If you do not have large tires and do hard-core off-roading, then you would select NO for this option.

Core Charge: You will be charged a core charge. Contact us when the core is ready, and we will send you a return shipping label to send your core back to us. You must wrap your core up the same way your new box comes to you: Plugs in the ports, diaper wrapped around the plugs, placed in the heavy poly bag and put in the same box. By doing so it will ensure it will get to us with no issues. You must send the same box you ordered back to us for full credit on your core!

Core Charge Box Type: All Cores Returned must be the exact same type as what you received.  If your box came as a 3-bolt, then you must return a matching 3-bolt to get the core refund.  If you order a 4-bolt (if that style is an available option for your box), but return a 3-bolt, you will only receive 1/3 of the core charge back.  However, if you order a 3-bolt, but have a 4-bolt to send in, that will receive the full refund amount.

**Core Refund Method & Dates (NO Exceptions)

If we receive your core within 60 days we will credit back to your original payment method.

If we receive it 61 days or after, you will receive store credit.

I was quite skeptical that the red-head would be any better than the rebuilds that I had purchased previously from the local auto parts store. However, I thought I would give it a try, even though the price was definitely higher. I am so glad that I did! I have now been driving on the red-head for a few months, and it works great! Also, the difference in steering tightness is night and day. Nice product, and worth the extra expense.

I have been running the redhead steering box for several months now and this thing is awesome it tightened up my steering no more wandering feeling took the play out it's really smooth and it was easy to install I replaced the steering shaft also and got rid of the rag joint very highly recommended

This box was a disappointment along with Redhead support. It looks nice and didn't leak. However, from day one it was loose and had 3 inches of play. Redhead suggested issues were elsewhere and not their box. I requested a replacement that I would pay for if they would refund upon return of original and they would not. I replaced with an S10 box and it is orders of magnitudes better for my on-road highway driving. BJs has gone out of their way to rectify and my rating is not a reflection of their support. BJ's Response: the box was inspected and found to be tight and within specifications. Redhead did adjust the top end slightly, but was otherwise perfect.

Short version, excellent. Long version, I have replaced some tie rods and all the front ball joints in a attempt to get the steering tighter, I messed with the adjuster on the "rebuilt" box that was on my Jeep when I bought it only to have the heavy feel and not much center return, but still a lot of play. This box fixed my play, I am hoping it fixes the stiff spot on cold mornings. The feeling is still a little heavy, but I think it will loosen up with a little time. A tip, buy new PS lines, even though I replaced my pump a few years ago and put on a new HP line, this one still froze at the box, so I put two new Gates hoses on with the new box.
