Questions and Answers
Remanufactured, NOT rebuilt. And yes there is a difference, a big difference. Unlike many of the products out there, S&J engines are not simply taken apart and rebuilt. They are painstakingly inspected, piece by piece, element by element and each component is given new life. And rather than expect yesterday's equipment to keep up with today's tougher engine tolerances, S&J uses the latest in engine technology, tools, and expertise to transform your engine. S&J continually upgrades its equipment and training to ensure the engines we produce today are equal to or better than the original. When you purchase your engine from S&J Engines you receive the highest quality remanufactured engine available from the most committed engine supplier in existence. When it is possible to do it better, they will.
In order to activate your engine warranty, S&J Engines, Inc. must receive a completed Warranty Form within sixty (60) days of receipt of purchase. Failure to complete the verification process renders your warranty null and void. To view warranty requirements and conditions, click

**Note: sometimes we have engines that are already built / ready to ship that are painted grey. If the color you select is different, we will include a can of paint in the color you select.
Image is for illustrative purposes only, and may vary from actual engine.
**CORE REFUND NOTE:
All cores must be received back within 5 months in order to receive a core refund to your original payment method. After 5 months, core refunds are only available as store credit (no exceptions). Also, all cores must be in good, rebuildable condition. Any cores that have damaged / non-usable parts may incur charges (which will be deducted from the core return value). Engines that are 0.060 or over are not rebuildable, and will not receive a core refund.
Very Happy
I had them rebuild my 401. I was very happy with the results. His engine builder was very professional and I have had no issues with the motor yet. Only complaint I have is I would have liked to know what size pistons they put in it. Other than that I am very happy. The turn around time was less than 3 weeks from the time my motor left my shop and came back.

Q:
If I ordered a 401 how long would it take for delivery? What is the warranty?
Asked by:
Marvin
- 12/15/2015
A:
If they are in stock when ordered, they ship out within 1-2 days. If they aren't in stock, but cores are on-hand, they take a few days to build, then ship shortly after. If no cores are on hand, that can take a few days to few weeks depending on how quickly cores are available. If you need one quickly, it's best to call us to verify stock and eta. Regarding the warranty, under the product description the warranty is listed as:
7-Year/100,000 mile warranty - Not Pro-Rated

Q:
Just found out about your reman engines. I have heard good reviews. My question is can the 401 be built with Pistons that have a 9-1 compression? What would the extra cost be and would it void the warrantee ? Thanks Grant Rubino.
Asked by:
Grant
- 3/27/2016
A:
Our builder can easily accommodate upgraded engine builds, with everything from compression ratio requests, to upgraded camshafts, upgraded cylinder heads, etc. Email me directly at

for specific details and pricing.

Q:
I have a1975 j20 with a 360 and a 4 speed. Can I just drop the 401 in its place? Also I am under the impression that my intake and headers from the 360 will transfer straight to the 401, is this correct?
Asked by:
Phillip Palmer
- 6/2/2016
A:
Yes to all of the questions. But, you will need a different harmonic balancer / damper, and your flywheel will need to be balanced differently for the 401 than the 360.

Q:
Can I get just a short block?
Asked by:
Karl
- 4/23/2016
A:
Yes, we can sell a short block. They are $1,578 plus a $550 core charge. Unlike the long blocks, which carry a 7-year / 100,000 mile warranty, the short block has a 90 day warranty. Contact us if you would like to place an order.

A:
I would recommend the double roller timing chain, RV cam upgrade and oil line modification. That will get you more power but still retain great vacuum and driveability.

Q:
Can you put engines on layaway?
Asked by:
Graham
- 11/28/2016
A:
Yes! Note that when you do this, we wait until the layaway is paid off to order the engine, and there may be a slight delay if a core isn't available (we would then put you in line for the next core that comes in).

Q:
Hello, Would you have an AMC 401 block and crankshaft I could purchase or do you only rebuild customer cores?
Asked by:
Shayne
- 8/12/2016
A:
The inventory changes daily on remanufactured engines, and sometimes there is a wait for a core to arrive. With that said, you can always place an order and with your approval, we can charge your card and get an order placed with our builder. That way, when a viable core arrives, you will be guaranteed a place in line.

Q:
I want to replace the 304 in my 1972 cj 5 and would like to buy either a 360 or 401 long block !. will you take my 304 as a core? 2. what are the horse power and toque rating off these long blocks?.
Asked by:
Neal Sprott
- 3/29/2016
A:
No, we have to have either a 360 or 401 respectively for the core. Horsepower and torque are close to original, but we can build them to higher levels for additional cost.
